Muslims pray five times a day, all five of which are preceded by the "adhan," or the call to prayer. This call is often recited over the mosques' speakers and it consists of the "shahada," which is the Islamic statement of faith: "There is no deity but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God." This declaration of faith is one of five pillars of Islam and it's recitation is required upon conversion.
One of the many things I love about Jordan is the influence of religion. It is such a drastic change from the United States. This really makes sense when you think about the fact that the Middle East is the birthplace of three major religions: Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.
I am not saying that I wish the United States' society was more permeated with religion like it is here, but I do think it is one of the many things that makes this region so unique and fascinating.
So sometimes I find myself awake around the crack of dawn, just in time for this beautiful recitation, which I believe anyone can appreciate regardless of nationality or religious-affiliation.
